Konstantin Vasiljev.
The Old Man With an Owl.
|
1976.
Oil on canvas.
Memorial Museum of Vasiljev, Vasiljevo, Russia.
|
Konstantin Vasiljev was a talented Russian artist who passed away when he was still a young man. As a young artist,
Vasiljev tried his hand at various painting styles, from classical to modern. As a result, the unique Vasiljev technique was born.
Vasiljev’s paintings give us an insight into the mysterious sensory world created by Vasiljev based on his study of the
ancient Slavic myths and their search for spiritual perfection. These works let us experience the legendary Russian spirit and heroism.
Vasiljev’s work was long rejected by the USSR Painters Union who was in complete control of the Soviet art world at that time.
Only in 1976 Vasiljev got permission for his first exhibition. This exhibition created a sensation and was an immediate success.
But on the first day of this historic exhibition Vasiljev perished, killed by a speeding train on his way home.
It was a strange and mysterious death.
For a long time after the Vasiljev's death, his artworks were still unknown to the general public. Various ill-wishers tried to tarnish
the artist’s name and even tried to destroy his paintings. Only in 1985 the first complete exhibition of Vasiljev’s works finally occurred.
Konstantin Vasiljev finished the featured painting, “The Old Man With An Owl,” a few days before his death.
